Day trading penny stocks sounds fun and exciting and can be profitable. But you just can't throw a dart and hope to pick the right one. Money can be made in this market, but you need to be very careful.
Many new investors start out trading penny stocks. Why? Low cost to enter the market. You can begin trading with only a few hundred dollars. Granted its easier to day trade 100's of shares with a 5 cent stock as opposed to trying to day trade a share or two of Apple.
The first thing you have to check is to see if the penny stock company really does have any value. Some people have set up companies that are known as shell companies. These companies are essentially worthless, but get touted as the next greatest investment. You will need to do some research to see exactly what the company does and how it earns it income. Buying a company with no assets but with a great “story” will cause pain in your investment portfolio.
Penny stocks are not traded on the New York Stock Exchange. For the most part they trade on the pink sheets or bulletin boards. The penny stock market doesn't have the same oversight as the other stock exchanges so there is a higher possibility of fraud and manipulation.
It can be easy for the new investor to get caught up in the hype surrounding a penny stocks. Visions of purchasing a stock for 10 cents and watching it go to $10 are an investors dream. It may happen, but it will take some serious research and work on your part to find such a stock.
The key here is not to be swept up in the hysteria of a stock. You might be reading various chat boards hearing how great a penny stock is doing and you might be afraid of missing out on it. Do your homework. Is there really something to this stock? Who is promoting it? Are the people on the stock boards really investors or paid writers pumping the price of the stock up so the insiders can sell it to the unsuspecting public. It does and will happen.
Day trading penny stocks can be profitable, but you must approach it with a skeptic’s eye when reading about hot penny stocks. Do your research before investing and you will do much better than listening to the latest hot tip.
